Pacific Coast Road Trip

Lewis and Clark Trail

Upon reaching the Pacific Ocean, the Lewis and Clark Expedition had to find a place to stay for the winter, while waiting for the Rockies to again become passable. Their primary requirements were plentiful game, drinkable water, and shelter from the ever-present rain. With some guidance from the local Clatsop tribe they found a suitable location on a small bluff overlooking today's Lewis and Clark River. They built a a small cramped wooden structure and called it Fort Clatsop, where the soldiers waited out the cold damp winter. Unlike the previous winter at Fort Mandan where they socialized with the neighboring tribes, at Fort Clatsop such interactions were limited to mostly small-scale trading.

A Steep Hiking Trail

This westernmost stretch of your road trip along the Lewis and Clark Trail brings us through some fine territory in beautiful Oregon. Saddle Mountain State Natural Area is an incredible presence of nature and mountain. There is nothing like standing at the summit and seeing the world that surrounds it, although it is not an easy hike. The elevation changes dramatically over a relatively short stretch of trail. The wildflowers are rare and unique to the elevation, so be sure to stop and smell the crisp, clean aromas and view the canvas of rolling beauty off into the distance.

Historic Reenactments at Fort Clatsop

The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent their winter at Fort Clatsop from December 1805 until March 1806. There is a Fort Clatsop exhibit built by the explorers, an exhibit hall at the interpretive center, an orientation film and a gift shop available at the visitor center. Ranger-led programs and historic reenactments (costumed programs during the summer) take place here in the fort and trailheads.

Kayaking and Canoeing

Called the Lewis and Clark River after the explorers traversed its shores, Netul Landing honors that river's Indian name. A great place for water sports enthusiasts interested in kayaking or canoeing, the boat launch is on the Lewis and Clark Columbia River Water Trail. This 146 mile long water trail follows Lewis’ and Clark’s tour on the Lower Columbia River from Bonneville Dam all the way to the Pacific near Ilwaco, Washington.

Family Fun at a Maritime Museum

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is an important part of the Pacific Northwest’s maritime history featuring six galleries with interactive exhibits, the Great Hall, and the Lightship Columbia along with a WWII era US Navy Destroyer. Learn what it is like to drive a tugboat, make a Coast Guard rescue, and live in Astoria at the peak of its salmon fishing days. There is a word-class collection of maritime artifacts available for viewing on the US Navy Destroyer. Outside on the dock, you can explore the wonder of the Lightship Columbia - a floating lighthouse.

Exploration on the Pacific Coast

Captain Clark and twelve others from the Corps of Discovery decidedly were the first tourists of Ecola State Park as they marched and climbed their way to the ocean shore in 1806 to see a beached whale. Year-round recreational activities are available here for the whole family. There is plenty of room for picnicking, and there are many trails to follow with interpretive engagements along the way, giving you a chance to walk in the footsteps of Captain Clark and his team. Surfers will love catching a wave at Indian Beach! Bird watching and wildlife observation are amongst visitors’ favorite activities here, and you can even eye gray whales during their spring and winter migrations.
