Wilson Island State Recreation AreaLewis and Clark camped out around Missouri Valley, Iowa in 1804 near Wilson Island. Wilson Island State Recreation Area originated as an island sandbar around 1900 and now covers a vast 544 acres of cottonwood forest. This secluded retreat offers great camping, hiking, and picnicking to its visitors. The plentiful wildlife will captivate observers as deer graze nearby, snow geese fly overhead, and Bald eagles perch in the trees. Mushroom hunters will find that this is a prime location come springtime. Picnic areas are scattered along the shoreline of the Missouri River for its feasting families and visitors to envelop themselves in its beauty. The park’s campground, one of its most treasured facilities, features 135 shady campsites. The modern camp area provides showers, restroom facilities, 63 electric camp sites, and two larger youth-group camping areas. Five miles of trails are laid out to be enjoyed whether hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, or mountain biking is your passion. |
