Frontier Army MuseumIt stands to reason that a museum with one of the nation’s finest collections of horse-drawn military carriages would be housed in a former riding stable. The Frontier Army Museum at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, sports a unique blend of carriages and other vehicles, weapons, uniforms and equipment. The collection creates a sense of what life was like for the frontier soldiers who served west of the Mississippi River between 1804 and 1917. Among the museum’s gems are a 1917 Curtiss JN4D aircraft, known as a Jenny, which was one of the first planes used by the U.S. Army, and the sleigh owned by General George Custer when he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth. Another prized military artifact is the 1832 Army officer’s coat worn by General Henry Leavenworth. The museum is the permanent home of the exhibit “Beyond Lewis and Clark – Exploring the West.” |
