Fort Osage National Historic LandmarkLocated near Independence, Missouri, Fort Osage takes you a step back to when present-day Kansas City was on the western frontier, and lets you experience the lives of the men and women who secured the route westward along the Missouri River. Built in 1808, it was originally known as Fort Clark in honor of William Clark, the co-leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Fort served as both a military garrison and trading post for the Osage tribe. Overlooking the southern bank of the Missouri River, this historic site has been reconstructed to resemble Fort Osage as it stood in 1812. Authentically dressed interpreters portray the daily life of both the military and civilian populations. |
