Fort Atkinson State Historical Park

Acting on Captain William Clark's observation that the site was an excellent location for a fort, Fort Atkinson was established in 1820 as the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. Located in current-day Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, the fort was established to secure early fur trade and river traffic. Much of that historic outpost has been reconstructed here, and living history demonstrations are given throughout the summer. The gunsmith and blacksmith are found at the Armorer's Shop, while military and civilian activities are interpreted along the west barracks wall. A carpenter and a cooper have workshops there, and the Indian Agent can occasionally be found in his quarters at the Council House. Near the visitor center there's a statue display of the "First Council", depicting the August 3, 1804 meeting between Lewis and Clark and representatives of the Otoes and Missouris. While no food or lodging is available at the park, there's a small picnic area near the parking area.
