Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Near the confluence of the Missouri and Grand Rivers, in Chariton County Missouri, sits the large Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The over 10,000 acres at the refuge is home to waterfowl, and most notably Canada geese. It is estimated that between 10,000 – 80,000 geese winter in the area. There are various activities to keep human visitors busy, including guided nature hikes, turkey calling contests, scavenger hunts for children, fishing, boating, and especially wildlife observation. During the months of October and November, waterfowl visitors are at their peak and the site is something to see. At other times of the year, visitors can still take in a view of waterfowl or some of the many white-tailed deer that reside in the area.
