Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Situated among the rolling plains of northeastern Montana sits the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge. There are almost 32,000 acres within the refuge, which is an important breeding and stopover habitat for many species of migrating birds. Hundreds of thousands of birds pass through the area, making it the perfect destination for bird watching, as well as wildlife viewing and photography. Opportunities for fishing and hunting of waterfowl and upland birds are also available. In the winter, visitors can enjoy ice fishing in Medicine Lake. At the refuge headquarters there is a 99 foot high observation tower that provides an expansive view of the western half of the refuge. The fourteen mile wildlife drive takes visitors past wetlands, grasslands, lakes and ponds containing many species of wildlife. The drive also passes an overlook where the available binoculars allow guests to view an American white pelican colony and other interesting species.
