Van Meter State ParkVan Meter State Park of Miami, MO has got some very intriguing sites to see- and we’re not talking palm trees! For centuries, the land was the terrain of Native American hunters (known by the French explorers as the “Oumessourit” or Missouri Indians). Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet created a map in 1673 pinpointing an Oumessourit village here, and there are still remnants featured here for visitors to explore. The Old Fort, a hand-dug earthwork, and a field of ancient burial mounds are a mystical blow-back to the land’s native history. Looking for more than just a history lesson? There are six hiking trails that wind through the Pinnacles (local nickname for the land) affording incredible views of Lake Woolridge, the historic remains, and the great Missouri River. Basic and electric campsites are available at Van Meter State Park. The 18-acre lake is great for fishing and access is granted for small boats or canoes. Don’t miss out on picnicking under the trees of Oumessourit Natural Area! |
