North Dakota Heritage CenterVisit an Indian camp, a homesteader’s yard and a buffalo wallow. Crank up an old Model-T. There is much to see and do at the North Dakota Heritage Center, located on the state capitol grounds in Bismarck. Here, in the state’s largest museum, historical and cultural displays tell many tales of life in the Northern Plains. The struggles, successes and relationships of pioneers and Plains Indians are told through exhibits, artifacts, tools, personal effects, photos, movies, graphics and even a little mood music. The prairies, the Old West, Native Americans and the state’s geological, agricultural, political, military and industrial history are all explored here. Bismarck is home to many historic sites, campsites, wildlife refuges and the Dakota Zoo. Cruise the Missouri River on the Lewis and Clark Riverboat. For those feeling lucky, the Prairie Nights Casino, run by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, is less than an hour from the city. |
