Double Ditch State Recreation AreaDouble Ditch State Recreation Area is located 17 miles north of Bismarck along the Missouri River in North Dakota. Double Ditch Indian Village is revered as one of the most significant Mandan Indian earth lodge villages that clustered around the Missouri River. Double Ditch State Historic Site now encompasses the original village and provides interpretive information for its visitors. The village was inhabited by the Mandan Indians between 1490 and 1785; the remains of earth lodges, midden mounds (a.k.a trash heaps), and fortification ditches are still visible. There is a recreation area between the village site and the river that opens its 116 acres to outdoors fun and relaxation for the public. Hiking and bicycling are great ways to explore the area through the trail system. Many sideline exhibits and interpretive signs dot the trails as you tour through the park’s spectacular views. This day use park is makes for a great picnic and afternoon stroll through nature, history, and culture. |
