Lewis & Clark Caverns State ParkAlthough the explorers never knew of these caverns’ existence, Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park still took their namesake. The park is located thirty miles from the mouth of the Jefferson River and near Whitehall in Montana. Lewis and Clark Caverns is the state’s first and most famous state park. Cardwell Bridge and Limespur are the next closest access sites on the river. The geological phenomena present in these caves include stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helicitites that tell a history of the limestone that forms them. Visitors planning to tour the caverns should expect two full hours of spectacular experience within their walls. The caverns are only available for exploration during the warmer months. However, the hiking trails, rental cabins, and campgrounds are open all year long. The campgrounds provide for tent and RV camping as well as a rental tipi. A visitor center, ampitheater, picnic areas, showers and more cater generous hospitality to overnight visitors and larger gatherings. |
