Willapa National Wildlife RefugeThe Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is located in southwestern Washington. The over 15,000 acres of the refuge consists of temperate rainforest, tidelands, ocean beaches, coastal cedar forest, and streams. The refuge is situated within Willapa Bay, a scenic estuary, and is home to spawning wild salmon and Roosevelt elk, as well as loads of migrating shorebirds and threatened and endangered species. There are many recreational opportunities available to those who visit the Willapa NWR, including bird watching, wildlife observation and photography, hiking, fishing, and hunting. The Salmon Art Interpretive Trail tells the story of a stream near the refuge headquarters and the many species that live there. Long Island is the largest of the islands in the refuge and is accessible only by boat but contains many opportunities to view the surrounding wildlife, and also offers primitive camping areas. |
