Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge

Stretching along the Columbia River are about twenty islands that make up the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge. The area’s primary purpose is to preserve the wildlife and fish habitats of the Columba River estuary. The refuge habitats include riverine islands, riparian forest, forested swamps, marshes, tidal sand flats and upland pasture. Wild salmon, migratory birds, and other plants and animals thrive in the area. Since most of the Lewis and Clark NWR is open water, there are many opportunities for boating and that is the only way to access any of the islands. Some islands have areas for hiking, and there are also fishing and hunting opportunities available
