Fort LapwaiFort Lapwai is located in Lapwai, Idaho and some of its sites are part of the Nez Perce National Historic Park (the duplex Officers’ Quarters and the Northern Idaho Indian Agency building). The fort was established in 1862 in response to the gold rush and remained in use until 1885. In 1904 the Northern Idaho Indian Agency relocated to Fort Lapwai and the fort was converted into a government Indian school and then into a tuberculosis sanitorium with a hospital, dormitories and a school. The officer’s quarter’s building still exists, and the parade ground and some of the stables are still intact. |
