Heart of the Monster

Don’t let the evil name intimidate you. According to ancient tribal legend, this volcanic rock formation known as the Heart of the Monster is the birthplace of the Nez Perce Indians. Here, it is said, the mythical figure Coyote defeated a monster, and the Nez Perce people were created as the beast’s parts fell to earth. Listen to the audio program and learn about the lore, legends and culture of the tribe. Enjoy a family picnic and bring a camera along – the state of Idaho has designated the site on the banks of the Clearwater River in East Kamiah, Idaho, a “watchable wildlife” area. And don’t forget the fishing gear. Chinook salmon travel upriver to spawn, and the river is flush with massive steelhead trout – many weighing in at more than 20 pounds. Other area activities include water sports, bird watching and berry picking. There are also three ski areas in the region, along with spots for snowmobiling.
