Menoken Indian Village State Historic Site

This prehistoric archaeological site east of the Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota, was likely inhabited in the first or second decade of the thirteenth century. The Menoken Indian Village State Historic Site was home to late Plains Woodland Indians who were primarily hunters and gatherers. Because the village goes so far back in time, its inhabitants can’t be linked with certainty to the Mandan, Hidatsa or Arikara tribes of North Dakota. But archaeologists believe these ancient tribes probably had ancestors living in Menoken Village. Remnants of the small community reveal the presence of oval-shaped, earth-covered homes and a prominent fortification system comprised of a high wall and deep ditch. After touring the village, enjoy some of Bismarck’s attractions: visit the Dakota Zoo and the Railroad Museum, or hop aboard the Lewis and Clark Riverboat and cruise the Missouri River.
