Williston Things To Do

Fort Buford State Historic Site

Fort Buford was established in 1866 near Williston, South Dakota. Located near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rives, the fort was a major supply depot for military field operations. The fort was established to protect overland and river routes used by immigrants that were settling in the West. The fort is probably most remembered though as the place where Sitting Bull, the famous Hunkpapa Sioux leader, surrendered in 1881. The site still has original features such as the post cemetery site, a stone powder magazine and a large officer’s quarters building, which now operates as a museum. There is a self-guided tour of the site available to visitors, as well as a picnic area and campgrounds nearby.
