Snake Creek Recreation AreaThe Snake Creek Recreation Area near Platte, SD is a fisherman’s (or fisherwoman’s) dream! Lake Francis Case draws boaters and anglers from all around to its bountiful waters and unique scenic attractions. The lake is 107 miles long, and has 540 miles of shoreline. Walleye practically jump into your lap, here. Many other great catches are also available including smallmouth bass, northern pike, sauger, and pan fish. There is a full-service marina with a fish cleaning station for your convenience. Lightning or chemical reactions will ignite the oil-bearing shale on the bluffs sometimes causing them to smoke for years on end. The Lewis and Clark Expedition were told to watch for these “burning bluffs” as they passed through this area and there is an interpretive sign near the park telling of their lost (and found) comrade, Private George Shannon. Hiking, swimming, volleyball, and horseshoes provide a well-rounded vacation experience. Camp or lodge at one of the cabins and stay for a while! |
