Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge

The Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in south central North Dakota. The refuge includes over 22,000 acres, of which the majority of the area is comprised of lake bottom, while the remaining areas include smaller wetlands, mixed grass prairie and cultivated uplands. This area is considered one of the best places to view birds in the country and is an important breeding and migratory site for more than 20,000 shorebirds a year. The highlight of a trip to Long Lake is viewing the myriad varieties of birds and plant life that change throughout the seasons, and are especially vibrant during the spring and fall migratory seasons. There are also occasional special events hosted here, as well as opportunities for visitors to hike, fish, hunt, and observe and photograph birds, waterfowl, wildlife and plants.
