Lake Andes National Wildlife RefugeThe Mountain Prairie Region of South Dakota is home to the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge. The lake bed is flooded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to be used by migratory birds and other wildlife, but most notably waterfowl and other water birds. The area is also home to bald eagles, ring-necked pheasants, song birds, white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrats and other small mammals. The main attractions for visitors are wildlife observation, fishing and hunting. There is also an educational interpretive center, guided tours for groups, and a nature trail along the lake shore where songbirds abound, as do many sights of nature. |
